Abstract
The ketogenic diet (KD), a high-fat, low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein
dietary intervention, has gained renewed attention for its therapeutic
potential in various neurological disorders. By inducing ketosis and shifting
the brain’s energy metabolism from glucose to ketone bodies, KD modulates
neuronal excitability, neurotransmitter balance, mitochondrial function,
oxidative stress, and inflammation. This review summarizes the mechanisms and
clinical evidence supporting the use of KD in epilepsy, neurodegenerative
diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and
other neurological conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), migraine,
and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
